Yeah, Ed is right, that's the typical reason for getting that error. For
instance if you defined an IP of 192.168.0.1 w/ a 24 bit subnet mask (
255.255.255.0), then 192.168.1.1 would be an invalid gateway because it
would need a gateway to reach the gateway. You can solve that by either
using an IP address on the same subnet as the gateway, or adding a static
route to the gateway so it knows it can reach it directly via the interface
w/o a gateway.
