[NMLUG] Ripping book to CD, legally

If you want a PDF or text file from an actual book, there are some places that
will do that for you (or, if you feel destructive, you can take the binding
off your books and run them through a page-feed scanner and OCR it
yourself). "Planetary" or "overhead" scanners can scan books
non-destructively.
Searching google for "scanning books" comes up with a few places that will do
this, but none of the sites quoted any prices . . . I can imagine that it
might be expensive.
The price might vary depending on whether you just want images of the pages,
or whether you want full OCR.
If the books you want are out of copyright, you could try Project Gutenberg
and see if someone has already converted it:
