Well, I have various uses for virtual machines, not all hosting. If I'm
setting something up for "real" use, generally just getting something with
multiple-processors and as much RAM as possible is a good bet. But for
example, I've got one host that can handle running 5-10 virtual machines
with a moderate-light load on each that's a dual-core amd64 (Athlon 64 X2
4200+) w/ 2GiB RAM.
I've also run 3 virtual hosts off a dual-core PIII-700 1 GiB system in the
past with no problem, but it was very basic, low-footprint stuff like
serving DNS, XMPP, etc.
On the other hand, closets full of old cobbled systems isn't too bad for the
low-budget penny-pincher, since they can often be had for cheap or free,
and a PII-400 w/ 256 MiB on it's own can outperform a virtual machine on a
shared host for many tasks. This isn't "corporate" friendly, of course. ;)
