Not that I can provide a lot of info, but here is what little I know.
The renderfarms at SNL and LANL are mostly x86 based, in addition some
of them are a few years old.  Although they are not the greatest and
latest in terms of hardware, that does have a benefit.  These systems
have had the kernel and subsiquent software tweaked to the maximum
over the years...and that is where the benefit is.  They have become
highly optimized for their specific job and thats what makes them
fast.  If you think about...do you really need extra drivers for
hardware thats not upgraded, but thats just a start.  So that is what
I know.  Lastly if you check out the 500 super computer list (or
whatever it is) LANL and SNL have quite a few system on it and most
have their own website describing the system, some with pics. Later.
