[NMLUG] Mandriva 2007 shortcoming
I like Gentoo.
I never have problems installing pre-compiled software, because I don't
install precompiled software. I install everything from source. I was a
little annoyed when they started not supporting stage 1 installs (start by
compiling your install environment) and a little more when it stopped
working. But with a stage 3 install, I can still completely recompile my
entire system. I can't think of a better test to make sure your hardware is
up to snuff or a better way to ensure your software is all consistent.
In that vein, my employer recently let me get a Dell PowerEdge 2950. Dual
processor, dual-core Xeon with hot-backup power supplies. 1333 Mhz FSB.
