[NMLUG] Recent conclusions on distros

I gave a final "college try" to installing OpenSuSE 10.1 and found the
YAST update function AFU - which is a known bug and SuSE/Novell has
issued a patch yada yada, but why should a final release of a major
distro be so messed up? On top of which Novell is backing off the
Reiser filesystem because Hans Reiser was arrested on suspicion of
murdering his estranged wife (or something like that) and Novell is
too Politically Correct to touch the issue. Since when is Linux
Politically Correct? If (hypothetically) Linus Torvalds robbed a bank,
would the entire world drop Linux? Oh well, I don't use Reiser anyhow.
Mandriva 2007 is expectedly smooth and I don't yet have any real
complaints, except that I haven't yet been able to implement 3D
hardware acceleration which my Nforce 6800GT card is capable of. The
3D Desktop function is snazzy; most importantly, everything seems to
work. I had trouble with Blender and Maya 8 until I installed
python-imaging, which cured them. The Powerpack DVD has thousands of
files and can be found online for as little as $9.99 (shipped), a lot
less than Mandriva wants for it..
Fedora Core 6 is out, but I think I'll skip it. I'll give Debian
another shot when Etch comes out.
And the winner is... ?
