Is there a way to register a .org domain (for a non-profit)
for free (or at least cheap)?

I'm happy to pay SWCP $20/year not to worry about it.
But for a non-profit work is cheaper than $$.

i.e.  Is something like Tucows somehow "open"
where I could register myself....  perhaps
I'd need to provide authorative DNS or something to do it
myself for free.

There always seem to be free WWW hosting space, but
what is the real cost?  (Ads.  No PHP.  Not allowing
your own HTML... just fill their forms...?)
I haven't bothered myself, since I've had my own
domain(s) since before WWW was popular.
