Wow, sounds like a great success! Thanks for the update and I look forward to hearing more. Wish I could've been there.

Good morning, LVLUG & NMLUG members.
Wow! Yes, as many of you know we had a marvelous turnout for our first
Linux Install Fest. We filled one computer-lab at NMHU with people and
computers. At around 2:00 PM we finally got Revolution OS projected to
the front of the classroom using one of the dozen or more PCs we
installed Linux on. Actually, Bil will correct me because the OS he
installed on my PC was not Linux but, Zeta. A variation of BeOS not
quite Open Source but moving in that direction. Ironically, a message
popped on the screen as we watched the film saying please activate. We
did activate the OS finally after the film was over. Zeta looks really
sweet and it was up and running, playing the DVD quickly. By the way,
Bil had some kind of personal record of installing Slackware 10.2, in
thirty-six minutes!
We installed several Linux versions with the most popular being Mepis
and next being Slackware, 10.2. Overall we had just enough installers
to keep the attendees informed and moving along. We experimented with
resizing partitions while Micro$oft Windows XP (NTFS) remained intact
on more than one attendee's PC. This was a relief of course, for one
reason I forgot to bring the Install Fest waivers, also it was nice to
see the smooth transitions to dual boot OS. Windose-Linux were not the
only dual boot setups we did. For instance, on the PC I used at the
Install Fest I already had Mepis installed, we resized my swap file
partition and the primary partition and created another partition in
which we installed Zeta. A few of us went round and round with grub
&/or lilo attempting to get the dual boot setup to work properly.
Lot's of learning going on at levels I can only guess at. I hope those
of us new to Linux can grasp the concepts concerning installation of
add-on packages. We did get lots of help with the different types of
installation packages. I hope some of it sticks. I believe that a few
us the newbies concur that with every version of Linux it appears to
be a different routine installing packages. Even with my vague
knowledge of Free-BSD I found that I had plenty to offer the group as
I have a strong computer background and many years of experience in
hardware and DOS.
Ok that's about all I can write this morning. Hopefully, more will
come to me later. At the moment it is far too early in the morning to
give the Install Fest its due credit Everyone said it was a big
success. When I get to work this morning I will put my newly re-setup
Linux box back together and take a serious look at what we did to it
on Saturday. Thank you Bil for the NVidia card which was essential to
make my PC play that movie. I will of course keep you all informed as
I trust you will keep us informed about how your setups are doing.
Sincerely,
Brian Rodgers
Until we get the LVLUG list server setup send letters to
brians.outfit@gmail.com I will distribute them to the group.
