*The newly-formed Las Vegas Linux Users Group, including Brian Rodgers,
owner of local computer repair shop "The Outfit," will be offering Las
Vegas' first Linux Installfest on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at the Highlands
University's Hilton Science Center from 10AM until 4PM.
The Installfest will feature demonstrations of Linux running on PCs and
laptops, talks on Linux and the Free Software Movement and a screening
of the documentary _Revolution OS_. Admission is free. Additionally, the
public may bring their PCs and Laptops to the Installfest and have the
Linux operating system installed at no charge.
Rodgers states, "I believe a PC user with average skills can have one of
the new Linux graphical distros installed, online and fully operational in
an hour."
About Linux-- Linux is a computer operating system. Developed and
maintained by thousands of programmers worldwide, Linux is not the
property of any corporation or profit-making entity. Long used by
scientists and academicians, Linux is gaining in popularity among home
users as well. Those who prefer it over Microsoft Windows often cite its
superior stability and security (Linux is far less prone to viruses than
the Windows operating systems.)
The Linux operating system comes with hundreds of free software
applications, including the famous Firefox web browser, the Mozilla
Thunderbird e-mail client, the OpenOffice suite of word processing,
spreadsheet and presentation applications, a graphics application and
much, much more. Linux has equivalent applications for most software
which run on Windows. Linux can also be installed on the computer
alongside Microsoft Windows, so the users have a start-up menu offering

the choice of which operating system they wish to use.
The Las Vegas Linux Users Group (LVLUG) is a local group of Linux users
that exists to promote and support the use of Linux and associated free
software in the Las Vegas, NM area. For additional information on LVLUG
or the Linux Installfest please contact Brian Rodgers at (505) 454-9661.
