I like Andres' idea of the low wattage Via epia motherboard. That could give you lots of power with less energy consumption.

Of course, the idea of getting lots of power and flexibility and no out of pocket $ by using an old computer does have 
its' appeal.

Yeah, I guess you need a hard drive for that.

I looked at it several years ago when LCDs were first appearing on the scene. I compared a 17" CRT and a 15" LCD both 
with a maximum 1024 x 768 resolution. The life cycle cost was about equal considering purchase, financing and energy use 
for a typical office running 8 hours a day/50 weeks per year. LCDs are a lot cheaper now so they are the obvious best 
choice.

If you want to measure it yourself, you can get one of these inexpensive power meters from the New Mexico Solar Energy 
Association.
