Sr. Systems Administrator

DESCRIPTION:

Systems administrator lead of SAMBA?s data center / engineering operations team.  This position is a 
key role in a Web-hosted application company, involving the on-going development of our 24/7 
customer facing production. Your experience, passion and innovation will transition SAMBA?s 
operational environment from a regional start-up concern to a nationwide production environment, 
supporting end-users, engineering and customer support services.

Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you will be responsible for performing hands-on operations 
engineering, including information system design, network configuration, troubleshooting, 
systems/database administration, SAMBA application administration, software deployment, systems
monitoring, etc for both SAMBA?s production and software development environments.

As an experienced senior systems administrator you?ll bring to the role a strong background in 
Linux/Unix system administration, network management fundamentals, 24/7 monitoring, and hands-on 
experience supporting high availability systems and services.

Innovation, knowledge and experience with open platforms, open source technologies and mission 
critical management tools are core to this role. You will leverage this knowledge with acquired 
business knowledge to fashion a network environment that can be eventually managed on a
day-to-day basis by less technical players.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Working closely with management, product management and the engineering team to:
* Systems Architecture design and review
* Ensure high availability of systems and services
* Infrastructure Management (network, firewall, servers, web servers)
* Application Management (web servers, databases, backups, syndication servers, with an emphasis on 
Apache/Tomcat servers)
* Software Deployment and upgrades
* Systems and database administration
* Security and control
* 24/7 monitoring and response of production operations.
* Assessment of make/buy tradeoffs and vendor selection for technology, tools, and services.
* Technical risk assessment and resolution.
* Work with the engineering, QA, management to build an operations plan.

REQUIREMENTS:
* Experience working in a mission-critical, customer facing, data center for 5 or more years
* Systems administration experience with Unix, BSD, Linux/Gentoo, Windows, etc. configured for 
hosting on-demand Web applications and Web services.
* Services administration experience with Apache, Tomcat, SwiftMQ (or comparable messaging platforms).
* Excellent experience with shell programming and other scripting tools for system and deployment 
configuration, monitoring and other targets of network administration task automation
* Networking experience including hands on administration of DNS, LDAP, Proxy servers, Checkpoint 
firewalls, CISCO routers, iptables, etc.
* Experience with web application load balancing a strong plus
* Familiarity with administration of Postgres and MS SQL Server Databases
* Proven ability to work in a fast paced environment with rapid development and deployment cycles
* Team player (responsible for commitments/schedules, resourceful, and respectful of peers and 
management) with excellent communication skills.
* Straightforward and upfront conflict resolution style.
* Self-starter and results focused individual with the ability to work independently and in teams 
while handling multiple tasks.
* B.S. in Computer Science or Information Services preferred.

HIGHLY DESIRED EXPERIENCE IN ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING AREAS:
* Programming skills in Java, Ruby and BASH shell scripting
* Java-based Sockets level programming
* UML Jail services creation, configuration and deployment
* Previous experience as an early member of a data center team
* Experience in both small and large companies.
