[NMLUG] Mandriva 2006 Powerpack, cheap
I like Mandrake 10.1, haven't tried Mandriva 2005 and
look forward to checking out 2006. For noobs like me
the big problem with the cheap discs is they don't
come with any of the proprietary software that is
included with the fully-supported-paid-for version.
For me it is way too much work to find and install
nvidia drivers, Adobe Reader, etc. Actually the most
intimidating one for me is the codecs for MPlayer.
That's why I've resorted to paying for and using
Linspire and then playing with other distros like
Mandriva, Ubuntu, Fedora, Mepis and SuSE.
But I guess if someone doesn't need a manual then they
probably wouldn't have a difficult time getting all
the proprietary stuff to work. Hopefully I'll be in
that position some day but for now I'm happy to being
using a distro that just works out of the box and then
go out on learning excursions when I feel like it.
