[NMLUG] 64-bit SuSE
- Subject: [NMLUG] 64-bit SuSE

I'm in need of a 64-bit capable SuSE install.
This is a new dual processor machine, with large memory, so
I'm OK with building a new kernel, but we need an install
that gets up and running (somewhat) before we can build that kernel.
The free SuSE disk I got from Novell does not seem to be able to make
it through the boot process (it locks when starting syslogd, or nearly
thereafter)
Anybody know where I can get a fairly recent SuSE (IA64 capable)
install media?
I also have (Here in Albuquerque) a SuSE 9.1 DVD version which you can borrow. I'd be glad to come and give you some assist with the installation.
The only fault I've found with this install is that on some machines, the sound, in the default configuration, didn't work with Unreal Tournament 2004. I think that the issue is the 64bit Alsa driver which is installed.
I've never tried duplicating the install disk, but very few users need the 64 bit version, so I've never needed to make a copy. I don't know if you can download a copy, but I'm virtually certain that you can. Or better said, I'm certain that you can perform a 64bit FTP install. If you're into BitTorrent, you can certainly find 64bit ISO images which can be burnt onto DVD. I've obtained some distros that way. SuSE does NOT offer legit ISOs.
The FTP install is a snap. You boot your box, either from diskettes you make, or from a bootable install CD. You then install whichever modules you need, i.e networking, PCcard, etc., and then configure your NIC. You then simply connect to one of the many FTP servers available, and perform the install online. For a full-featured default install, you can figure on 2~3 hours on cablemodem, slightly more via cheapo-DSL.
Write back if you need the Disk, or any further info/assist!
