[NMLUG] 64-bit SuSE
Aaron:
I'm doing LOTS of Suse these days and to me it seems you have two options -
1) your first and best option, get a copy of Suse Enterprise 9 server
for 64 bit systems (actually the box includes cd's for x86 and x86_64
(EMT64)). Its about $300 and can be had readily. I've got it running
on a 4p opteron system, 16 GB of ram, and an ultra 320 scsi raid and the
install was a breeze. They are releasing patchs daily but put them into
clusters on a quaterly basis so it will best to get the patch CD's, they
are on SP1 right now, and use it to boot the system. From there you
will need the boxed CD's to finish the install. Its much, much nicer
that the spew comming out of RH these days and cheaper too!
2) get Suse Pro 9.2 or 9.3 (you can download DVD images of 9.2 but
remember if you buy it the thing that comes in the box is a double
density DVD so a "normal' DVD reader won't cut it! You really don't
want 9.1 because the kernel doesn't support large chunks of ram.
Let me know if you have questions -
Be well -
