[NMLUG] QWest DSL with Actiontec GT701 modem

  • Subject: [NMLUG] QWest DSL with Actiontec GT701 modem

Recently Mike Kruchosky posted about Qwest DSL with the Actiontek modem.

Using SuSE 9.x, I've had problems with the modem in question, because of DNS-related issues. All of my browsers, with the exception of Opera, seemed to be defaulting to IPv6, and it appeared to me that the modem was choking on that version.

SuSE was recommending that I install a newer version of my firewall:
1. Downloading and installing the update to SuSEFirewall
2.ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/9.1/rpm/noarch/SuSEfirewall2-3.1-310.3.noarch.rpm

That didn't do the trick!

Here's what did work:

2. Disabling IPv6 according to the directions at

http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/10/90_mozilla_ipv6.html

Also tried this, problem -- a messed up /etc/resolv.conf. Seems
they put:

   domain some.name
   192.168.0.1
205.171.3.65 (or whatever dns ip they have)

Just reverse the order and the speed difference goes away:

205.171.3.65 (or whatever dns ip they have)
   192.168.0.1
   domain some.name

After trying these modifications, I've had no further problems with the DSL service or the modem, except that sometimes for a period of several minutes, very occasionally, I'll completely loose my DNS service all together. Seems that within the last month or so, this is happening more frequently, at least three times in the last six weeks or so.

Hope this might help someone out.....:-)
