While I have not tried Ubuntu yet, what really interest me are distros
that are live cds with options to install. The reason I like live CDs is
everything is already configured or easy to configure and you can always
carry your "desktop". The best part is if you system crashes its >5
minutes to get it back and running, this is really nice for a newb. The
best example is Knoppix. What I am currently using is SimplyMepis.
What I like about SimplyMepis is its a Debian Unstable based distro with
a very good, complete, but small selection of software included on an
installable live CD (small as compared to Knoppix which has the whole
kitchen sink). It runs KDE3.2 and has excellent hardware detection and
very easy configuration of WiFi and ethernet (which I always found
somewhat difficult in Knoppix). I suggest giving it a try. The user
forums are at mepislovers.org and the main website is mepis.org.
