While that is true, a "surface" test should still be able to tell me if 
some parts of the "storage area" are damaged, or not.

I've been considering this as a potential failure point for my camera 
for some time, and finally had an image fail to save correctly this weekend.

So, the question is, "is there a tool for this?" Even though flash 
doesn't have a surface, per se, it will still have failure, and you 
should be able to test for them with the same tools.
