[NMLUG] MythTV
I have attempted to use it with mixed results in Debian.
I have been using Hauppauge PVR 250 cards. They seem to work fine recording
under MythTV, however, though I could watch TV in other X-based apps, I could
not do it under MythTV. I couldn't watch even recorded Mpegs. I understand
that it was a specific problem with Debian.
The other problem I had was that it seems to not record in mpeg, but in a
format that is more raw, something like DV (but not AVI). I'm using Hauppauge
MVP boxes that play Mpegs over a network, out to a television, and it requires
popular formats, like mpegs or wma.
We ended up buying a windows solution called SageTV because it was very
no-nonesense. We used the trial version, and could count on the program to
record properly based on a program guide (rather than somehow forget like
winTV2000 or miss the beginning or end without having to program the show
manually.)
For a TV tuner card, it seems that no one is making as good of a card for
non-digital TV as the Hauppauge 250/350 series (though I think they're made by
Seimens). The main selling point is that it has Mpeg hardware recording right
on the card. We had tried a Pinnicle card, but the quality didn't even compare.
