Looks like you were having a different problem, but FWIW
the recent versions of modutils don't read a
concatated /etc/modules.conf or /etc/modprobe.conf (or whatever it was
called for the couple months that it was in /lib/modules somewhere) but
rather now on a a debian box it just reads all the files
in /etc/modprobe.d and update-modules is deprecated. So just edit
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa and /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base to fit your config
and you should be in good shape.

For non-alsa stuff that you would have in the past put in modules.conf
or wherever if there doesn't seem to be an appropriate file
in /etc/modprobe.d you can just make your own and name it whatever you
like :)
