Well, actually, you don't NEED to update. It's just that BSD developers 
believe in efficiency and bug/security fixes. That's why CVSup/make 
world and building the kernel is so prominently talked about. Linux docs 
just stay away from the subject, so it is more of a black art for them. 
It really is a pretty basic set of procedures, at least, once you're on 
the 'Net.

We also have a binary package system, it's part of /stand/sysinstall or 
available from the command line (pkg_add).
