[NMLUG] Printer setup

I can't seem to get my printer to work.
I think I traced it to missing info in /etc/printcap but I have not been
able to figure out how to fix it.
How does the print capabilities file get set up? Is debconf supposed to
do it? is there a way to get debconf to reconfigure it?
Or if editing by hand, where do I find the correct info for a HP720c?
Printer is an Deskjet HP720c
The System is Debian testing/unstable.
I installed cupsys and pnm2ppa.
After installing CUPS and adding the printer with
http://localhost:631/printers
Printing a test page indicates everything printed OK but the printer
does not actually print. A file gets created in /var/spool/cups but it
never actually prints. I get no error messages.
With the KDE print manager, I changed the printer system to lpr/lprng.
Then printing a test message indicates it printed OK (but nothing
prints). And I get a pop up window that indicates Catastrophe!
pr: unable to print file: client-error-not-found
This led me to discover no HP720c in the /etc/printcap file.
