Another issue is that so much of what happens in Washington happens by
means of monster 'appropriations' bills where unrelated crap is inserted
willy-nilly. There is no way to refuse some parts without destroying the
government.
This is one set of reasons why we Libertarians advocate removing power
from Washington. At least, with our solution, the more effective sets of
congresscritters (at the state level) collect revenues from productive
and happy citizens, and the corrupt get lynched. If you don't like one
state's policies, either change them or vote with your feet.
Part of the reason RIAA et al have power is because there is a
monolithic power structure they can "buy". There's nobody to blow the
whistle, especially now that newscritters are reading the Governor's
scripts and defending their actions. If there was a ZMA to look over the
AMA's shoulders, for instance, I'm sure we'd have much better health
care. Likewise, if New York pointed out Connecticut's idiocies and
vice-versa, we'd at least see that thinking people in government see the
idiocies. Now, it's perfectly okay that a-holes run amok, because nobody
(with the ear of the public) blows the whistle any more.
