[NMLUG] Using *nix to mirror NTFS partitions

There are other options to consider - having moved my junk several times
now in the last few months, and several times a year on an irregular
basis, and having many apps I "like" to use and data and garbage I seem
to "need".....
If you were moving data only the tar.gz would be fine...but apps need
registered .dll's and that could be a big issue depending on how the
apps set-up in the OS......
1. imaging is good if you want your system back same as it was on new
hdwr but can be a pain, and may take some trial and error if you are not
going to same / like base hardware (driver issues can be a gotcha).
2. compressed moves can be a pain if your connectivity is slow, File
rights are also an issue (sysprep can help)
3. mirroring and synchronizing is a possibility, look for the old
robocopy NT tool. So long as you can mount a drive in the Redmond OS it
won't care what you are sync-ing. You will need to re-register your apps
in the new os. but you may need to anyhow....
4.If hardware allows, install the old drive as a second. on board moves
are faster than over the wire.
I have gone to installing all my base apps (non- MS boxed stuff) in a
separate partition so moves and re-registering are "much faster". I also
run wine using the "apps" partition...
if you have MS based apps you need to run but don't want to run a
second OS......
I've also found that the stuff you keep may not always be the stuff you
need. so burn the partition to a DVD or two pull back only what you need
when you need it.
DVD's are real nice because they will mount on Linux or MS stuff and
then all's well.......

Okay, okay, I know I'm a Linux weenie, but I have to ask someone if
this is
possible.
Here's the situation: I have to run Win2K at work. My old hard drive
is a
mere 8GB, with only 800MB freespace left. I want to mirror everything
to a
new 120GB drive to avoid having to reinstall & configure Win2K and all
my
apps. The IT folks gave me Drive Image, which will supposedly do the
job
easily. Yeah, right! After an entire afternoon fooling around with
the
Windows-environment solution, I wondered if I can do it in Linux
instead,
since I'm going to partition the new drive for dual-booting anyway.
Being a newbie, I thought I might be able to tar & gzip the old Win2K
partition (8GB) while in Linux, then reverse the process to transfer it
all
to the already formatted NTFS partition on my new 120GB drive.
So, is it feasible? stupid? plagued by some unforeseen "gotcha's"
(possibly related to NTFS permissions, etc.)? Has anyone done this
(successfully) before?
Thanks. (No laughing, please....)
