[NMLUG] netbsd sparc install problems

  • Subject: [NMLUG] netbsd sparc install problems

I've got a headache from googling all night trying to get netbsd installed on this stupid sparcstation5/170 (sun4m). Time to ask the big guns.

I've burned 2 NetBSD CD's (sparccd.iso and multi-cd1.iso) burned at 4x as suggested.

I can use STOP-A and "boot cdrom" to get the install process started. Then I run into problems. Install recognizes all of my devices (cd0, cd1, cd2, sd0, cd3, cd4, cd5, md0). Then asks me "Installation meduim to load the additional utilities from:". My choices are cdrom, tape, floppy. I can select CD, insert the multi-cd1 disk into the cd-drive that the boot cd was in (I have a 6 cd tower) and select the default [/dev/cd0a] and get a mount error.

mount_cd9660: /dev/cd0a on /cdrom: Operation not supported by device.

Any pointers out there?

I would certainly entertain the idea of doing a netinstall (I found instructions on how to use a windows machine as a tftp server) but the instructions called for downloading "the tree" without specifying what "the tree" was.

Thanks for any advice anybody can give me.
