In any case, enabling the numlock is something done by the distro creators
(unless you do it yourself).  It's nothing inherent to linux.  If I recall
correctly, FreeBSD does not automatically enable the numlock key.  But I'm one
of those folks that prefer it on, so I fixed that "problem".  It was a fairly
trivial setting and I can't imagine it being terribly complex to disable under
Linux.
