Can't you disable num-lock (if you want) using the X keyboard mapping?
It has been through some generations, and I haven't done it for a while.
I used to have a file to swap ctrl and caps-lock, but these days
it seems to be a question on most X-configurators, and I no longer
know how its done. I think this uses a newer keyboard remapping procedure.
