[NMLUG] Debian Amends Social Contract
I wouldn't have an issue with the Deb release cycle if sarge also got security
updates, it doesn't. If you want a production system that isn't ancient you
can run sid but it doesn't work so well for production environment. You could
backport all your more recent programs, but hey why bother running Debian
then. It's beyond me why they haven't pushed to get sarge security updates
like woody. Sarge (testing) seems to get the worst of both worlds, not the
most bleeding edge and no security updates. Why would anyone test with sarge?
I agree completely, they shouldn't release software before it's ready, however
they shouldn't hold the whole system up because, say, the new installer isn't
ready. As to sarge not being ready, well it's been ready, unready, ready,
unready an floats between that state frequently as far as being a usable
piece of software. The talk about the new installer being needed is just
that, talk. I somehow manage, even today, to install Debian and upgrade to
sid without it. All cynicism aside I've seen this sort of release cycle in
hardware, it's been my experience that the real losers of this sort of
release practice are the large majority of average users like me.
