I've run heavily demanding CAD & EDA software under VMware and haven't
seen a significant slowdown. The processor in your machine doesn't need
to be particularly hefty (I've used it on a PII with no problems), but
make sure you have LOTS of RAM.
I rarely use non-free software except when absolutely necessary, but
I've been pretty happy with the performance of VMware when I've had to
use it.
