Thanks Sam.

That solved my mouse problem.

I had to modprobe both uhci_hcd and ehci_hcd to get my USB compact flash card 
working again. But I still have not been able to get the scanner and palm pilot 
working.

I also figured out the modem problem. The modem is now ttyS14 instead of ttyS4. 
That's weird. Anyone know how the ttyS* numbers get assigned to ports?
